Pretty Hate Machine es el primer álbum, también es conocido como Halo 02.El Halo 01 fue el sencillo Down in it. El álbum fue editado el 20 de octubre de 1989 y alcanzó el éxito de la crítica.
Pretty Hate Machine fue grabado en varios estudios alrededor del mundo, colaborando Reznor con algunos de sus productores más admirados – Flood, Keith LeBlanc, Adrian Sherwood y John Fryer. Después salieron los sencillos Head Like A Hole, Terrible Lie, Down in It y Sin. Se hicieron videos de los tres primeros temas mencionados.
